Environmental Health

The Greene County Department of Environmental Health operates under the rules and regulations that govern subsurface sewage disposal systems, set forth by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, a Division of Groundwater Protection.

In addition to regulating subsurface sewage disposal systems, the department upon request performs bacteriological water analysis on private water supplies to determine total coliform and fecal coliform bacteria present.

Our main objective is to provide a healthy environment for all citizens of Greene County. We are exhausting all efforts to work with the public in identifying problems and taking corrective action when needed to improve the biological quality of waste water.

Lastly, we do issue permits for Septic Systems within the County.

To Obtain a Septic Layout for a Septic System You Will Need To:

File an application with the Environment and Conservation Office for a layout to be done. Offices are located at 129 Charles St.

  1. Name, address and phone number of land owner.

  2. Lot or tract must be designated with lot number, tract number or 911 address clearly visible.

  3. Have the home and the lot staked off.

  4. Must have specific directions to each lot or tract - space is available on back of application for directions and/or map.

  5. Lot or tract corners and property lines must be visible.

  6. Lots must be cleared of thick underbrush. For large tracks (> 5 acres) the house site and surrounding vicinity must be cleared of thick underbrush.

If needing a copy of existing septic layout please have the name of the original landowner at the time of installation of septic installation or the name of the subdivision and lot number if applicable.
