The Greene County Animal Control office provides for the safe capture, impound, and disposal of animals as needed to ensure public safety, health, and welfare.
There is an agreement between Greene County and the four municipalities within its borders for funding of this department. The agreement is that the City of Greeneville reimburses 24% of cost, Town of Mosheim 3% of cost, Town of Tusculum 3% of cost, and the Town of Baileyton 1% of the cost, with the county funding 69% of the cost. This percentage is based upon population.
The Animal Control Office employees 4 full time Officers. 3 of the full time officers that work 7.5 hrs shifts. Two Officers work “road calls” and one Officer performs office/shelter duty. The 4th full time employee is the Director of Animal Control that over sees all activities and also works road calls and office/shelter duty’s.
The Greene County Animal Control Office also serve as rabies offices with the Greene County Health Department.
The Office operates the James “Jim” Eagle Animal Shelter located at 990 Hal Henard Road. Shelter hours for viewing are: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and office hours are: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday and holidays we are closed.
The shelter has an adoption agreement with the Greeneville/Greene County Humane Society, helping Paws Mountain View Rescue, and Bright Hope Animal Rescue. Animals held at Animal Control for at least 72 hrs may be adopted thru these agencies.
Stray animals are picked up Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

EMERGENCY AFTER HOURS CALL
After hours emergency calls include – vicious animal, severe animal attacks, sick or strange-acting animals, or animals taken into care due to a traffic stop and arrest. Due to staffing law enforcement makes the initial after hours response and determines if animal control is needed or if the situation can be resolved.
STRAY ANIMALS AND ANIMAL WELFARE INVESTIGATIONS
Stray animals and animal welfare investigations are conducted during weekday work hours. After hours/weekend will be made based upon emergency criteria .Greene County Animal Control will respond to after hour’s calls at the request of on scene law enforcement officers.
